Things you need to know

Member Types

You can file for either an athlete or non-athlete membership. Athletes are those that play the sport and non-athletes are everyone else including coaches, officials, chaperones, or other staff.

Program Types / Age Groups

We offer both youth and adult programs. Select the Youth program if your activities involve youth athletes. Select the Adult program if your activities involve adult athletes.

Protection - Insurance Coverage

Your AAU Membership comes with the benefit of providing you with up to $50,000 in sports accident insurance while participating in AAU licensed events.

Extended (AB) Coverage

If you plan on participating in events that are not AAU licensed events, you will need Extended (AB) Coverage in order to extend your insurance coverage to those events.

Safety

The AAU takes safety for all of our members and volunteers very seriously. It is for this reason that ALL adult members must undergo a background check prior to being allowed to participate in an event. We also have a strong Concussion Policy and support the CDC's Heads Up program and encourage all participants to do so as well and take the available training courses.

Background Checks - ALL Adults

All adult members are required to undergo a background check. This is done automatically as part of your application process. It is because of this requirement that all adults MUST file their own membership application. Your membership will not be approved until the background check is completed. This process can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. Your membership benefits will not become active until your membership is approved.

Youth Memberships

Youth athletes do not need a background check performed, therefore, youth memberships are approved instantly and become active with full benefits as soon as payment is received.

Joining a Club

If you're already a member of an AAU club, you can select that club during the application process or select it at a later date. So, don't worry if you don't know what club you will be a part of when filling out your application.

Starting a Club

If you plan on starting an AAU club, you will need to have a non-athlete membership first. Once your membership is approved and you receive your membership number, you'll be able to file your application to start the club.

Application Process - What to expect

Youth Athletes

  1. Have the child(ren)'s personal information ready including full legal name, date of birth, home address, and parent's email address.
  2. Fill out the membership application. You can enter multiple youth athletes per application.
  3. Pay for your order.
  4. Check your email for a copy of your receipt and your membership number. Once you receive it, you're done and ready to start participating in AAU events.

Adult Athletes / Non-Athletes

  1. Have your personal information ready including social security number (required for background checks). All adults must fill out their own applications because you cannot authorize a background check for someone else.
  2. Fill out your membership application.
  3. Pay for your order.
  4. Check your email for a copy of your receipt.
  5. Your membership will not be valid until the background check clears you for participation. This process can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. Once the background check results are in, we will email you to notify you of your membership status and provide you with your membership number. Once you receive your membership number, you're done and ready to start participating in AAU events.

The AAU

The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sports. During its early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever," is shared by over 670,000 participants and over 100,000 volunteers.
