ORLANDO, Fla (September 8) - As part of the AAU Cares initiative, the AAU assisted those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Numerous AAU district leadership donated money to AAUCares4Houston to aid in relief efforts in the Houston, Texas area.
Dr. Roger J. Goudy, AAU President/CEO along with Joe Gura, AAU Cares Director and various AAU national staff delivered non-perishable items, bottled water and 10,000 items of clothing to Houston, Texas. Joining them was track legend and Houston native Carl Lewis.
"To see first hand the destruction Hurricane Harvey brought to the Houston area is heartbreaking," said Dr. Roger J. Goudy, AAU President/CEO. "We felt strongly coming to Houston to drop off relief supplies was the right thing to do."
Former track and field Olympian and Michigan AAU's Darnell Hall and some others donated clothing and other items for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey as well.
The AAU staff made it back to the national headquarters in Orlando, Florida just in time to weather another storm, Hurricane Irma. The AAU national office, located on Disney property, sustained minimal damage such as signage, tree branches and limbs in its parking lot and other wind-related damage.
