William B Curtis - AAU Founder

Our History

The AAU was founded in 1888 by William Buckingham Curtis to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sport. During our early years, the AAU served as a leader in international sports representing the United States in international sports federations and worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic Games.

The AAU focuses on providing sports programs for participants of all ages at the local, regional, and national levels with the philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever." The AAU is divided into more than 50 distinct districts, which annually license over 30 sports programs, 250 national championships, and 30,000 age division events with over 670,000 participants and 100,000 volunteers.
